Welcome to JackLab!
What is JackLab?
We are a community of dedicated musicians and linux users working together supporting other musicians and producers who wish to move over to an open source solution. We spend a lot of time working together testing software and hardware configurations for the best possible audio performance under linux. Our prime goal, however, is to work towards a fully polished linux distribution for professional audio use. This will allow a '1 CD install' of linux with preconfigured audio and music software. Already we have resources available to allow users to customise their standard openSUSE installation into a fully working Digital Audio Workstation. See 3 Steps to JAD for Beginners for more information on how to customise your openSUSE installation.
Why openSUSE?
Currently, there are quite a few linux distributions aimed at professional audio, for example: deMuDi, Studio to Go!, Studio64, Musix, dynebolic, Ubuntustudio, etc and they all do a good job of providing professional audio on an open source platform. However, although these distributions are easy to use 'out of the box', we have found that any further customisation is fairly difficult to do - especially for the eager musician who just wants to 'plug in and play!' In our experience openSUSE is one of the most supported, easiest distributions to use and is simple to customise for your individual needs.
JackLab Audio Distribution
JAD will be the finished product and the culmination of the work of many people. There will be two versions released:
1) A free, downloadable DVD .iso complete with the JackLab enhanced RealTime kernel, KDE-Light and the Enlightenment window manager. There will be a selected colletion of open source audio and midi software included, all pre-configured and ready to go. Support will be available through the JackLab community.
2) JackLab Studio Edition will be a commercial DVD which will contain the same system as the free CD but will include commercial audio samples and non-open source software. JackLab Studio Edition will contain the DVD media and a professionally printed instruction manual. Dedicated, high-priority support options will be available.
What's next?
Our major milestone will be to release the free JAD CD. We are planning to do this at LAC2007 at the end of March where it will be demonstrated in a live session.
Can I get involved?
JackLab is a community and always welcomes people with open arms. We are always looking for testers, translators, document writers and people who genuinely want to help. Pop by on our IRC channel #jacklab at irc.freenode.net and have a chat, we will be glad to see you.
