[edit] Other distributions specialising in audio and media
aGNUla DeMuDi/ReMuDi [1] is a project that was supported with 1.7 millon Euros from the EU with the goal of developing Debian and Redhat based audio distributions. aGNUla is the mother of all audio distros. The financial support has stopped and there have been no more updates on the website, the project is inactive. The developers are now active with 64studio.
Planet CCRMA [2] is a section of Stanford university with the target to offer an audio system working with Redhat/Fedora. The packages are rather up to date. Yum or Kyum, once set up with the repository sources, allows a very easy installation. CCRMA applications are equivalent to JAD1.0.
Ubuntu Studio [3] was a wiki site for using for the popular Ubuntu as an audio Linux workstation. Ubuntstudio is planning to release their own distribution complete with for audio, graphics and video editing.
Mandriva [4] offers good multimedia programs with the installation and can be extended with packages from Thac RPMs for pro Audio. But Thac isn't a Pro Audio specialist repository and so there can be a poor choice of packages and can be quite old or incomplete.
dynebolic [5] is a made for a high- performance distribution, running as live cd, but can be easily installed on a FAT32 partition. The packages aren't quite up to date, but the concept is good, empowered with an alternative rastafari spirit. Good for beginners.
Musix GNU+Linux [6] is a Debian-based, 100% free Linux distribution. It can run as a Live-CD or be installed to a hard drive. The latest version 0.79b19 includes a real-time kernel. It ships with support for several languages including Spanish, Galician, Catalan, Basque, English, Portuguese and French.
Studio to Go! [7] is a commercial live CD from the producers of Rosegarden. There is a demo CD available for download with several tutorials and a general overview of Audio Linux.
AudioSlack [8], cannot truly be called a distribution, but rather a package repository of audio programs for the oldest currently active linux distribution, Slackware [9].
64Studio [10] is a newly released audio distribution designed for the 64bit platform. There is also a version for 32bit platforms too. Based on Debian linux, and as of version 1.0, it contains the 2.6.17 kernel and Gnome 2.14 desktop environment. 64studio comes highly recommended from people who have used it. Be warned that a 64 bit based distribution cannot run 32bit Windows vst plugins which could be a big disadvantage for some, though there is also a 32 bit version of 64studio.
